Lesson Plan:
Digital Video Camera Use and Editing

Objectives:

Students will:
  • Record and download digital video.
  • Edit digital video and publish it to the World Wide Web.
NETS-T Standards:
1A. Teachers demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.
5D. Teachers use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.

Materials:
  • One teacher computer with lecture slides and web access
  • Digital video recorder, lavalieres, tripod, and firewire cables (1 per 3 students)
  • Access to Macintosh computers with iPhoto and iMovie (1 per student)
  • Instruction Sheet for using iMovie (1 per 3 students)
Procedures:
Have students get into groups of three.

Opening (5 minutes)

Announce daily outline and objectives.

Activity: Shooting Digital Video (25 minutes)

Demonstrate an online example of a student video:

Provide basic instruction on use of
digital video cameras, lavalieres, and tripods. Inform students they will have 20 minutes to shoot their video and return to the classroom. Provide each group with the necessary hardware and send them out to shoot.
Digital Video Editing (40 minutes)
As students return, assist them in downloading their footage to iMovie. Have each triad download their video onto three machines next to one another so they may help one another as they edit their projects. Additionally, provide each group with a copy of the iMovie Instruction Sheet and basic editing instruction.

Have students begin editing their digital autobiographies.

Once all students have made significant progress on their movies, demonstrate means of converting iMovie files into Quicktime Web files, uploading .mov files to a server, and coding web pages for embedded video.

Have students publish their videos to their Netstorage server spaces and link them within their blogs if desired.

Ask students how they might use digital video recording as an instructional tool. Provide an example by showing students the Gamen Warrior video.
Closing (5 minutes)
  • Review daily outline and objectives.
  • Remind students their draft e-portfolios are due for peer review during the last class session.

Absence Requirements
  1. Review the lesson plan and lecture slides.
  2. Using a digital video camera, shoot an approximately 60 second video of yourself that can serve as an introduction to your future employer.
    1. Edit the video (e.g., cutting/splicing, adding text, transitions).
    2. Upload the video to your e-portfolio blog.
