Digital Video
Camera Use and Editing
Objectives:
Students will:
- Record and download digital video.
- Edit digital video and
publish it to the World Wide Web.

Materials:
- One teacher computer
with lecture
slides and web access
- Digital video
recorder, lavalieres, tripod, and firewire cables (1 per 3 students)
- Access to Macintosh
computers with iPhoto and iMovie (1 per student)
- Instruction
Sheet
for using iMovie (1 per 3 students)
Procedures:
Have students get into groups of
three.
Opening (5 minutes)
Announce daily
outline and
objectives.
Activity: Shooting Digital Video (25
minutes)
Demonstrate an online example of a student video:
Provide basic instruction on use of digital
video cameras, lavalieres, and tripods. Inform
students they will have 20 minutes to shoot their video and return to
the classroom. Provide each group with the necessary hardware and send
them out to shoot.
Digital Video Editing (40
minutes)
As students return, assist them in
downloading their footage to iMovie.
Have each triad download their video onto three machines next to one
another so they may help one another as they edit their projects.
Additionally, provide each group with a copy of the iMovie Instruction
Sheet and basic editing instruction.
Have students begin editing
their digital autobiographies.
Once all students have made significant progress on their movies,
demonstrate means of converting iMovie files into Quicktime Web files,
uploading .mov files to a server, and coding web pages for embedded
video.
Have students publish their videos to
their Netstorage
server spaces and link them within their blogs if desired.
Ask students how they might use digital video recording as an
instructional tool. Provide an example by showing students the Gamen
Warrior video.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Review daily outline and objectives.
- Remind students
their draft e-portfolios
are due for peer review during the last class session.
