Materials:
  • Student laptop computers with iPhoto and USB  camera connector cords (one per group of 4-6)
  • Teacher computer with lecture slides and iPhoto
  • Digital cameras with extra batteries (one per 4-6 students)
  • Copies of the scavenger hunt items (one per 4-6 students)
  • Shape cards (one per student, similar shapes to allow four to six students per group)
  • Polygon shape name posters
  • Tape
  • Nametags/expert stickers printed on labels paper (one per student)
  • Black Sharpie markers
Procedures:

Plan to meet with a class of fifth grade students to complete this lesson. Place names of polygons around the classroom above ten different Apple computers with iPhoto. Have all students write their names on a nametag and stick it on their shirts.

Sponge Activity: Separating Students
(5 minutes)

Provide each student with a shape card and instruct them to find those in the classroom with the same polygon (getting them into groups of four to six). Have all groups members introduce themselves to one another and stand by the computer listing their shape name.

Opening (5 minutes)
  • Announce daily outline.
  • Announce daily objectives.
Digital Camera Scavenger Hunt: Planning and Picture-Taking (20 minutes)

Introduce students to basic use of digital cameras and downloading pictures. Explain the rules of the upcoming game.
  • All items must occur naturally without manipulation by scavenger hunt participants.
  • Students must stay together as a group and all group members (except one) must be in all pictures.
  • All group members must take at least one picture.
  • Each picture must be in a different building or at least 100 yards away from every other picture.
  • Groups must return to the classroom in fifteen minutes or less.
Hand each group a scavenger hunt form and provide them with two cameras (in case one isn’t working properly) and extra batteries. Start a timer, allowing each group fifteen minutes to photograph as many scavenger hunt items as they can.

Download and Project Creation (15 minutes)

Have each group download their pictures to a Macintosh computer and create a slideshow using iPhoto. Time permitting, they should add special effects including music, transitions, and titles.  Groups must be ready to demonstrate their slideshow in exactly 15 minutes. Start the timer.

When students are finished downloading the pictures to their iPhoto library, take their cameras and download all pictures to a single machine. From this machine, burn a CD for the instructors of both the elementary and university classes.

Student Spotlight (15 minutes)

Have students view each group’s slideshow by having each group bring their computer to the front of the room and attaching it to the projector. Encourage groups to describe their photos and encourage the remaining class members to laugh and clap appropriately.

Ask students:
  • Did you enjoy this activity? Why or why not?
  • What precautions do you need to take before and after assigning this activity to students?
  • How else could you use this activity to teach or deliver content?
Closing (5 minutes)
  • Review daily outline and objectives.
  • Review readings and remind students of reading quiz for next session.
Absence Requirements:
  1. Complete the digital scavenger hunt on your own. You must be in all the pictures.
  2. Create a slideshow of your scavenger hunt items using iPhoto. Include music for the slideshow and titles for each picture.
