Lesson Plan:
Designing Lessons

Objectives:
Students will:
  • Identify basic components of lesson plans.
  • Develop rudimentary lesson plans using word processing stationary.
  • Utilize basic features of presentation software to support lecture-based teaching.
NETS-T Standards:

1A. Teachers demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.
2E. Teachers plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.
3A. Teachers facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
5C. Teachers apply technology to increase productivity.

Materials:
Procedures:

Course Evaluation (5 minutes)

Have students go online to complete a two-minute course evaluation.

Opening (5 minutes)
  • Announce daily outline.
  • Announce daily objectives.
Lecture: Tools for Planning (15 minutes) – see lecture slides; hear audio
  • Define lesson plan (e.g., an organized plan describing what will occur during a specified timeframe).
  • Describe lesson plan templates (e.g., a guide to ensure teachers address all aspects of a lesson that research deems are important to student learning).
  • Show examples of lesson plan templates (e.g., Madeline Hunter).
  • Remind students how to use bullets in word processing and introduce stationary.
  • Identify and describe parts of model lesson plans while explaining their purpose for inclusion (e.g., research of educational psychology shows that students learn better when provided advance organizers, guided practice, and summaries). Demonstrate these concepts by developing an example lesson plan.
Guided Practice: Lesson Planning (15 minutes)

Have students return to their triad groups from the previous session and open their concept map lesson plans.

Have each group review their Inspiration concept maps/printed outlines from the previous session. They will then work together to transfer their pre-conceived lessons into lesson plan format using the simplified electronic template.

Demonstration: PowerPoint Slideshows (15 minutes) - see video

Ask students to identify successes, problems, and questions they faced when transferring the lessons into the new format.

Demonstrate the development of a simple PowerPoint-assisted lesson (see sample). Include explanations of the following features:
  • Add/Delete slide
  • Duplicate slide
  • Slide layout
  • Slide background
  • Master slide
  • Notes
  • Outline
  • Slide sorter
  • Slide transitions
  • Adding graphics, drawing features
  • Moving between slides
  • Animations
  • Copy / Paste
Guided Practice: Preparing Slides for Instruction (15 minutes)

Students work in their triad groups with their lesson plans to create PowerPoint slides to accompany their lesson plans. Have each group email an electronic copy to each group member for potential later use in their e-portfolios and for use at the beginning of next session.

Closing (5 minutes)
Absence Requirements:
  1. Review this lesson plan, the lecture slides and audio, and the movie demonstration.
  2. Using the lesson you conceived with your colleagues in the previous lesson, draft a very basic lesson plan on the simplified lesson plan template.
  3. Using the drafted lesson plan, create a draft PowerPoint slideshow. The slideshow must have at least two pages, two layouts, and a background.
