Lesson Plan:
Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction
Objectives:
Students will:
  • Display competent use of the K-W-L learning strategy.
  • Develop a concept map using basic features of Inspiration software.
  • Differentiate between and give examples of standards, curriculum, and instruction.
  • Describe the NETS-S and NETS-T Standards and provide examples of translating these standards into practice.
NETS-T Standards:

1A. Teachers demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.
2A. Teachers design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
3A. Teachers will facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards
3C. Teachers apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.

Materials:
Procedures:

Ask students to complete a release form that will allow placement of their pictures online. Then, begin to take pictures of students as they engage in classroom activities. After class, post pictures of activities online and inform students they may use these pictures for their e-portfolios at the end of the semester.

Have any students who have not yet logged their information into the course database complete this task.

Guided Practice: Concept Mapping of Standards (20 minutes)

Guide students as they use Inspiration to create a K-W-L concept map. It should describe their understanding of standards based on their readings. It must include a main topic titled “Standards,” three subtopics titled “Know,” “Want to Know,” and “Learned,” and several additional subtopics under both “K” and “W.” Inform students they will complete the “L” section after the lecture. When they finish, students should save their work for possible inclusion in their e-portfolios.

Opening (5 minutes)

Have students move to the front of the room.
  • Announce daily outline.
  • Announce daily objectives.
Lecture: Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction (30 minutes) - see lecture slides; hear audio
  • Define “standards.”
  • Differentiate between national, state, and local standards.
  • Differentiate between the NETS-S and NETS-T
  • Differentiate between “curriculum” and “instruction” and explain the interaction between standards, curriculum, and instruction.
  • Ask: “What do fourth graders learn in math?”
  • Access CCSD’s online version of the curriculum essentials framework (or CEF) and show students what fourth graders learn in math.
  • Tell students they will be writing and delivering a brief lesson in two weeks. They will need to identify one or more of the curricular objectives from the CEF and begin thinking about how they could teach it in a five minute, PowerPoint-assisted lecture.
Demonstration: Translating Standards into Practice (10 minutes) - see video
Provide an example of using technology to meet one of the standards. For example, address the standard “Teachers will facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards” within “Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum” by demonstrating use of Internet searching to find images of current events.
Closure (5 minutes)
  • Review daily objectives and outline.
  • Assign readings and reading quiz.
  • Remind students the “Technology Journey I – Final Draft” is due at the beginning of the next class via the WebCampus Assignment Dropbox.
Independent Practice: K-W-L (5 minutes)
Have students finish the “L” section of the “K-W-L” of their standards concept map. When complete, have them turn in a printed copy (with their name on it) and save a copy for themselves. Students may leave when they finish this task.

Absence Requirements
  1. Review the concept mapping video.
  2. Create a K-W-L using Inspiration to describe the National Educational Technology Standards. Complete only the "K" and "W" sections.
  3. Review the lesson plan, lecture slides,  lecture audio, and browser  video.
  4. Complete the "L" column of your concept map.
