Lesson Plan:
Web-Based Resources

Objectives:

Students will:
  • Competently describe the Internet and use it to effectively obtain educational tools and materials.
  • Identify educationally relevant searching tools.
  • Identify examples of no-cost productivity and instructional tools available via the Internet.
  • Suggest methods of using web-based resources for classroom teaching.
  • Utilize technological resources to create classroom materials.
NETS-T Standards:

1A. Teachers demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.
2B. Teachers apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
3B. Teachers use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
3C. Teachers apply technology to develop students’ higher-order thinking skills and creativity.
5C. Teachers apply technology to increase productivity.

Materials:
  • Student computers with Internet access
  • One teacher computer with lecture slides and web access
  • Tongue depressors with website types marked (one per depressor)
  • Butcher Paper (4 pieces at least 3’ X 4’)
  • Assorted Colored paper
  • 5 Glue Sticks
  • 5 Sets of Markers
  • Paper Cutter (1 small, 1 large)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
Procedures:

Break students into five groups. Assign each group one of the following categories (modified from the Wilson, Jones, and Hail article titled “The One Computer Classroom: Projecting Knowledge”): literature, museums, virtual field trips, webcams, and digital books by having them choose a tongue depressor without looking. Then, have them open the online lesson plan for this lesson.

Group Work: Describing Internet-Based Educational Resources (10 minutes)

Assign each group to spend 10 minutes reviewing sites within their assigned categories (see below). Inform them they will be creating a poster-sized depiction of their website type later in this class session.

Opening (5 minutes)

Announce daily outline and objectives.

Lecture/Demonstration: What’s Available on the Internet (25 minutes) - see lecture slides

Call all students together and introduce them to online educational tools by demonstrating popular sites. Inform them that nearly all modeled sites provide no-cost tools/materials.
Group Work: Describing Internet-Based Educational Resources (30 minutes)

Have students return to their groups from the beginning of class. They will have 20 minutes to create a poster-sized description of their website type. Encourage use of printouts, word processed documents, and basic art tools (scissors, colored papers, markers, glue). The posters must include the following elements: title, description, examples, and suggested uses.

After 20 minutes, have students tape their posters on the wall. Call all students together and have each group describe their poster to the rest of the class. Then ask:
  • What most impressed or surprised you about the resource type your group reviewed?
  • What least impressed you, and would this affect your decision to use this resource type in your future classrooms?
Closing (5 minutes)

Absence Requirements
  1. Review the lesson plan, lecture slides, and lecture audio.
  2. Select two of the resource types from the Group Work section of the lesson plan and review all linked sites. Then, make a poster (it can be small, but must incorporate printouts from the sites and word processed text) differentiating between the two resource types.
