Lesson Plan:
Web Authoring

Objectives:
Students will:
  • Differentiate between static and interactive webpages.
  • Define "blog" and "wiki."
  • Author and publish basic webpages using web authoring tools.

Sponge Activity: Reviewing e-Portfolios (15 minutes)

Have students get into pairs and have each group go to the online lesson plan for the day. Listed is a set of web addresses for elementary-level student created, pre-service teacher, and in-service teacher e-portfolios. Have pairs review at least one site from each of the following sections:
After 10 minutes, have students congregate in the group area of the classroom and discuss the following questions:
  • What elements appear consistently in the portfolios?
  • What designs did the e-portfolios use, and which of these contributed to the user-friendliness of the sites?

  • Opening (15 minutes)

    Announce daily outline and objectives.

    Debrief the Bracken field trip.

    Lecture: Designing Websites (10 minutes) — see lecture slides

    Explain to students that we will use blogging tools as our web authoring tool. Differentiate between:

    • Blogs and wikis
    • Static and interactive webpages
    Define WYSIWYG and introduce students to Blogger and blogging tools.

    Activity: Reviewing Educational Blogs (15 minutes)

    After 10 minutes, have students congregate in the group area of the classroom and discuss the following question:
    • What elements could you identify in the blogs and how were those elements used for educational purposes?
    Demonstration and Guided Practice: Blogging and e-Portfolio Development (15 minutes)

    Share a sample blog-based portfolio with students and review the e-Portfolio  expectations.

    Demonstrate developing a blog using Blogger (see example) and publishing documents to the World Wide Web via NetStorage. Explain the mechanisms for and reasons for using multiple servers.

    Have students procure an account on Blogger and create a public_html file within NetStorage. Students will then begin design their blog's structure, color scheme, and other optional visual design elements. Recommended fonts, colors, and graphics should be appropriate for a professional educational portfolio. 

    Closing
    (5 minutes)

    • Review daily outline and objectives.
    • Tell students about the reading and quiz.

      1. What elements appear consistently in the portfolios?

    3. Review the educational blogs and answer the following question in bulleted format:
      1. What elements could you identify in the blogs and how were those elements used for educational purposes?
    4. Acquire a Blogger account and create a public_html folder within your NetStorage account.
